2. EMS Personnel
a. Lieutenants Jerry Bennett and J. Dru Bragg and Firefighter/
Paramedics David Insley, Christopher Brown, D. Wade Catlin,
Melissa Brown, and Mike Donoway completed the mandatory
ninety-six (96) hours of continuing education for renewal of their
Paramedic License.
B. Fire Prevention Education
1. The Salisbury Fire Department observed Fire Prevention during the
month of October with the following activities:
a. The Salisbury Fire Department Fire Prevention Task Force is a
special group of Firefighters who are assembled each year to visit
schools during the Fire Prevention Week. When they visit schools,
they speak on fire safety and prevention, fire gear, and display
the fire engine.
b. The schools visited this year were Prince Street Elementary School,
Pinehurst Elementary School, St. Francis de Sales Catholic School,
Pemberton Elementary School, Chipman Elementary School,
West Salisbury Elementary School, Salisbury Christian School, and
Wicomico Day School.
c. In conjunction with the McDonald’s Corporation the department
was able to present Ronald McDonald Fire Safety Show to the
students of Pinehurst Elementary School, Pemberton Elementary
School, Chipman Elementary School, and West Salisbury
Elementary School.
d. Fire drills were conducted in all elementary and private school
systems in the Salisbury Fire District.
2. Department personnel visited the following neighborhoods as part of
the “After the Fire Program” during the quarter:

3. Fire department personnel conducted Fire and Life Safety Classes/
talks/displays/drills/stand-bys for the following during the quarter:

e. Asbury Child Development Center
f. Peninsula Eye Center
g. Wicomico County Autumn Wine Festival

4. Open Houses were held at the Stations during the quarter for
members of the community to visit and where information about fire
prevention and the department were available.
5. Assistant Chief Ed Hastings read books to children at the Barnes and
Noble Bookstore followed by a fire engine display during the quarter.
6. A Fire Extinguisher Class was held for the following students during
the quarter:
a. Salisbury University
b. Eastern Shore Criminal Justice Academy
7. Salisbury Fire Department Tours with brief Fire Safety Talks were
conducted for the following during the quarter:
a. Crosspoint Church of the Nazarene – 20 children and adults
b. Tiger Cubs – Salisbury Elk Lodge – 6 children and adults
c. Prince Street School – 100 children and adults
C. Community Services
1. The CPR Training Center taught a total of seven (7) CPR Classes
during the quarter to the general public. The department offers
Healthcare Provider and Heart Saver CPR Courses.
2. The following students have started their clinical rotations on our
Paramedic Units during the quarter:
a. Salisbury University Athletic Training Students
b. Parkside Career and Technology Center Health Occupations
c. Parkside Career and Technology Center Criminal Justice
3. Salisbury Fire/EMS personnel conducted medical standby/demos/
presentations for the following during the quarter:
a. Salisbury University – Sea Gull Century
b. Delmarva YMCA – 5K Walk
c. Wicomico County Wine Festival – Pemberton Historical Park
4. Department personnel provided fire engine rides for the Church of
God of Prophecy during the quarter.
5. Department personnel provided stand-by fire protection for the
following bon fires during the quarter:
a. Bennett Home Coming
b. Salisbury School
D. Home Fire Safety Inspections
1. Department personnel have issued/installed fifty five (55) smoke
detectors for members of the community during the quarter.
2. Fifty four (54) home fire safety inspections were completed and one
hundred forty three (143) homes were visited during the quarter.
Sixteen (16) smoke detector batteries were issued.
E. Underwater Rescue Team
1. New divers continued to be trained. The goal is to have sixteen
divers. The new divers are entering the last phase of their initial
training, which will require an open water certification. This
certification is anticipated to take place in the next two (2) months.
This will require dive candidates to perform their certification in an
area that has warmer waters.
2. The Dive-Rescue Unit continues to work towards a full encapsulation
process, which includes full face mask for black water operations. A
class is being scheduled for the dive operators to become certified in
the Interpiro AGA full face mask.
3. A drysuit was placed in-service during the quarter.
4. There was one (1) incident to assist Berlin Fire Department with a
vehicle over turned.
F. Note Worthy Events
1. The Mayor and City Council appointed David See to the position of
Fire Chief in December. Chief See promoted Timothy Keenan to
Deputy Chief and Leslie Thompson to Assistant Chief.
2. Salisbury Fire/EMS personnel participated in a tabletop drill at the
Salisbury-Ocean City: Wicomico Regional Airport during the quarter.
3. Assistant Chief Ed Hastings attended Salisbury School assembly
which was honoring various civic organizations including the
Salisbury Fire Department.
4. The Salisbury Fire Department held their Annual City Banquet for
members and guest .
5. The Department held their Annual Christmas Dinner for the Special
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Salisbury Fire Department. Each
Station also had Christmas Dinners for their members, families, and
guests.
6. Captain Greg Smith has submitted numerous articles concerning
department activities to the Maryland Fire Dispatch for publication
during the quarter.
7. Chaplain J. Harvey Dixon performs many services for Wicomico
County and the State of Maryland. He provides pastoral care for our
members, Wicomico County and other fire companies in the State of
Maryland, attends various meetings in Wicomico County and the
State of Maryland, assists at accidents and house fire alarms, hospital
visitations, funerals, and death notifications. He also works with the
American Red Cross and the community in helping citizens in
emergency situations.
