d. The Salisbury Fire Department Inspection Division reviewed
seventeen (17) site plans during the quarter.
e. Department personnel participated in the critique of the Rose
Street incident during the quarter.
f. The department performed controlled burns for training purposes
at the following locations during the quarter:
a. Building at Wicomico County North Lake Park
b. Building at 2520 Old Ocean City Road
c. Houses on Rose and Lake Streets
g. Assistant Chiefs Richard Hoppes and John Tull, Lieutenant John
Byrd, Firefighter Patrick Andrews, and Firefighter/Paramedics
Christopher Brown, Shirley Reddish, Daniel Webster, and David
Merritt are attending college this semester working on their
respective degrees.
h. Firefighter/Paramedics attended EMS continuing education classes
in the following during the quarter:

B. Fire Prevention Education
1. The Salisbury Fire Department observed Fire Prevention Week
during the month of October with the following activities:
a. The Salisbury Fire Department Fire Prevention Task Force is a
special group of Firefighters who are assembled each year to visit
schools during Fire Prevention Week. When they visit schools,
they speak on fire safety and prevention, fire gear, and display the
fire engine.
b. The Task Force spoke to over four thousand (4,000) students and
two hundred fifty (250) adults in local public and private schools.
c. In conjunction with the McDonald’s Corporation the department
was able to present the Ronald McDonald Fire Safety Show to
students at Chipman Elementary School.
2. Fire department personnel conducted Fire and Life Safety Classes/
talks/displays/drills/stand-bys/tours of the Stations for the following
during the quarter:
a. Oak Ridge Baptist Church
b. Cub Scout Pack 817
c. Wicomico Middle School’s Family Fun Day
d. Fruitland Elementary School
e. Bundles of Joy Day Care Center
f. Christian Community Child Care Center
g. Wicomico Day School
h. Asbury United Methodist Church Christian School
i. Timmons Bell and Slate Childcare
j. Shore Up! Daycare Center
k. Playtime Daycare Center
l. Bennett Middle School
m. Shady Pines Adult Day Care Center

3. Department personnel assisted Atria Assisted Living with their
yearly required fire evacuation drill at the facility.
C. Community Services
1. Department personnel filled dunking booths for the following during
the quarter:
a. Salisbury Christian School
b. Salisbury Middle School
2. Department personnel provided fire engine rides for the Family
Workship Center during the quarter.
3. Department personnel provided stand-by fire protection for a bon
fire held at Wicomico Senior High School during the quarter.
4. The CPR Training Center taught a total of five (5) CPR classes
during the quarter to the general public.
5. Our Paramedic Staff is precepting students on our Paramedic units
from the following agencies during the quarter:
a. Wor-Wic Community College Paramedic Program
b. Salisbury University Athletic Trainer Students
c. EMT/B Students from other Fire Departments
D. Home Fire Safety Inspections
1. During the quarter members of the inspection team visited one
hundred eighty three (183) homes. Thirty (30) home fire safety
inspections were completed.
2. Department personnel have issued forty six (46) smoke detectors and
sixteen (16) batteries for members of the community during the
quarter.
E. Underwater Rescue Team
1. Members of the team had forty eight (48) man-hours for the quarter.
2. Training dives, missions, and meetings for the team consisted of the
following during the quarter:
a. Three (3) monthly meetings
b. Wicomico River (Training Dive)
c. Evidence Recovery for Salisbury Police Department (Mission)
F. Note Worthy Events
1. Chaplain J. Harvey Dixon retired as Salisbury Fire Department
Chaplain on October 31, 2004 with over thirty one (31) years of
service to the department. A surprise dinner was held in his honor at
Station #2 on November 13, 2004 to thank him for his years of service
and devotion to the department.
2. The department held their Annual Christmas Dinner for the Special
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Salisbury Fire Department. Each
Station also had Christmas Dinners for their members, families, and
guests.
